Peter Tosh: Rebel, Icon, and Reggae Revolutionary

There will be a Peter Tosh Tribute on October 18th at the Central Florida Fall Festival 2025, on the weekend of what would have been his 81st birthday.

A Legacy of Resistance and Rhythm

Born Winston Hubert McIntosh in Grange Hill, Jamaica October 19, 1944, Peter Tosh was a founding member of The Wailers alongside Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer. From the start, Tosh stood out—not just as a powerful voice in reggae music, but as a fearless advocate for justice, equality, and freedom.

After leaving The Wailers in the mid-1970s, Tosh launched a solo career defined by fiery lyrics, bold political messages, and a deep commitment to Rastafarian principles. His debut album, Legalize It (1976), called for marijuana reform and personal liberty, while Equal Rights (1977) demanded justice for the oppressed. These albums cemented his role as reggae’s militant messenger.

Why Peter Tosh Matters Today

Peter Tosh wasn’t just a musician—he was a revolutionary artist. While Bob Marley brought reggae to the global stage with a message of unity, Tosh channeled reggae into protest and empowerment. He tackled police brutality, apartheid, inequality, and nuclear war, using his music as a weapon for truth.

His fearless stance often put him at odds with authority, but it also solidified his status as a cultural and political icon. Today, Tosh is remembered not only for his hits like “Legalize It,” “Stepping Razor,” and “Get Up, Stand Up,” but for speaking out when silence was safer.

In 1987, Tosh was tragically murdered at just 42, but his voice still echoes through generations of musicians and activists who see music as a force for change.

A Tribute

In celebration of Tosh’s legacy, and what would’ve been his 81st birthday, there will be a Peter Tosh Tribute at the Central Florida Fall Festival on October 18, 2025, at RasState in Clermont, FL. This tribute will honor Tosh’s impact on reggae, resistance music, and global consciousness—reminding us why he must continue to be celebrated.
